NGOs invited to Bond SDP event

The UK-based Bond International Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) Group is holding an open evening in London on February 10th.

At the event, the group’s steering panel will present its purpose and proposals for 2022, before inviting input and an open discussion, followed by an evening of networking and drinks. Please note the event has been rearranged from December 16th due to concerns over Covid-19.

Bond is the membership body for British non-governmental organisations working in international development (INGOs), and has hosted the SDP group since 2016. There are 93 members of the group including Save the Children, Oxfam GB, Plan International and Action Aid, with more being encouraged to sign up. It is currently co-chaired by Unicef UK and Fight for Peace, and has strong links with the Sport for Development Coalition which focuses on domestic sport for development across the UK.

Liz Twyford, co-chair for the Bond SDP group, explained that a key priority for the group in 2022 was to aggregate its collective impact, and advocate to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK Government on the role that sport can play in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as framed within the United Nations’ Agenda 2030.

“Our aim is to connect people and organisations working in the sector to share, learn and identify opportunities for collective action,” said Liz. “We want to increase awareness, understanding and consideration of the role that sport can play in supporting key strategic objectives for the FCDO, which we hope could lead to more international SDP programmes working with Government to achieve shared objectives.”

The event is open to all Bond SDP group members and any organisation that is currently using sport for international development which might be interested in finding out more about the group. Any British INGOs that are interested in using sport as a tool for development in the future, are also welcome.

Anyone wishing to attend should email with name, job title and organisation to confirm attendance.
